Please watch this video. Or read this Letter to the Editor of the Laguna Beach Independent written by a wise and amazing woman who has made and continues to make a positive difference in my life. Dr. Michele McCormick writes " ... marriage at the center is the keeper of social context and tradition, a life-long, life-giving covenant, a container, a safe harbor to navigate the vicissitudes of life, raise children, weather anger and conflict, and ultimately explore the many layers and seasons of love." Please read her insightful, intelligent and deeply personal essay.
Or read about Why Republicans are Against 8. Perhaps you will find this Personal Message to Californians on Proposition 8 or this liberal blogger's perspective interesting. Maybe you prefer this blog in which the writer states "Now, in all my time in seminary I never found that Bible verse about Jesus passing ballot propositions. It must have been in the Revised Standard translation and we used the King James translation." Perhaps you will be moved to act due to the attempt by the prop 8 people to add blackmail or outright lies and exploitation of children to the list of acceptable Christian behaviors? There are also many Mormons against prop 8, and there is even a website called Gays and the Gospel which offers 11 Scriptural Reasons LDS should oppose prop 8. Of course, there are many many Christians who oppose prop 8 (see my previous blog "What would you do" from 10/23). Go to Stop Prop 8 for info and more videos.
Please share these resources or anything else that you find about prop 8 that is intelligent and truthful. Please do something, in addition to voting, to defeat prop 8. Give money, send an email to everyone you know, ask them to do the same. Wear a sticker. Hand out info. Talk to your families, friends, co-workers, neighbors, the guy at the supermarket, the waiter, barrista, salesperson, dog walker, anyone. Ask them to do the same.
Please do one more thing every day until next Tuesday and ask everyone you know to ask everyone they know to do the same. Please do not let these people use their distortions and deception and fear tactics and scapegoating and ignorance and hatefulness and homophobia to take away our rights. Please do one more thing. Every day.
Do you want to know what to do? Simply go to the no on 8 website.
Do not be silently outraged and continue to be comforted by the voices in your own choir. Do not have to say "I'm sorry about prop 8" to anyone. To me. It will not be enough to vote no. Do one more thing every day. Do not let hate win.
I sincerely hope PROP 8 fails miserably.
ReplyDeleteBUT - if it DOES passes, is everyone prepared to spend another ba-zillion dollars on PR and possibly wait 20-30 years to "win" equality in CA?
AND - if it does NOT pass, which state will we focus on next so we can spend another ba-zillion dollars to purchase civil rights?
I know I am virtually alone here (except for Charles Merrill and his partner), but I think all of you are insane. Truly crazy....one step away from writing-on-the-wall-with-your-feces crazy.
Because if ALL of us truly believed we WERE equal, we would not be so patient as tax-payers and U.S. citizens. We'd simply KNOW we ARE equal, and refuse to pay into a system that not only denies our familes civil marriage but doesn't even acknowledge our existence (wait for the 2010 census).
I'm 43, and I will NOT wait until I'm 73 for fair and equal treatment. It's OK for the country at large to be ignorant, bigoted, mid-guided, and mid-informed. But that's not my fault. So until people GROW UP and show my family the same "civil" respect heterosexually-identified families are given, I owe this country and the IRS nothing.
How many times do I need to say this?
TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION AIN'T GWANNA HAPPEN!
